Operations – co-ordinated by Colin and Melanie Bishop Each of the teams welcomes help from other STAR members and the regular meeting of STAR Teams (the second Thursday of January, February, April, May, July, August, October and November) includes those willing to help without needing to commit to the level of board membership. Some teams have regular tasks (Operations with membership renewals and coach travel, Liaison and Goodwill with meetings with the club and fans forums, Social arranging discos and dinners) whilst others react to events (Campaigns pursuing the bad experience at the Wolves play-off, Exiles co-ordinating a new group) and others are continually researching (Heritage and Community) so there is room for getting involved on a regular or occasional basis. We have set up a yahoo group called STAR-Teams which is a useful way for members who want to help to keep in touch with both subjects being discussed at STAR-Teams meetings and be in the loop when a specific request is sent out. To join STAR-Teams send an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . STAR is still growing into the role of being a Trust after the role of a supporters’ club and so there are still tasks and opportunities that are possible and not listed above. If you feel there is something you could do to initiate a new area of activity please do not hesitate to let us know. We are constantly hoping for more help as there are tasks we would like to be able to do but other parts of life get in the way! Most are in the communication field for the various teams and are listed below, but this is not an exhaustive list so feel free to add to it.
We should establish contacts with the press in other local towns (Basingstoke, Newbury, Didcot, Woking, Bracknell, Wokingham, Maidenhead etc) to try and get STAR coverage (and indeed RFC coverage). We would need some research to prove that we have a fan base in those towns. We need someone to keep a web watch on RFC related sites to keep STAR in touch with new matters raised that we need to be involved in. We need to research new ways to contact fans at the stadium about STAR (we have notice-boards and a page in the programme but new innovative ideas are needed). For each stand we would like a volunteer to be available on each Saturday match-day from 2.15 to 2.45 for STAR members to contact with problems or information, If possible say 3 volunteers / stand to form a rota We would like someone to look into how we can contact people in the area about STAR and RFC in new ways. (an information point in the town centre, through major local employers, at leisure centres are all possible contact points but all imaginative thoughts are welcome) We would like someone to take responsibility for organizing special match-day events – when to bring out the flag, when to encourage balloons, special theme days. We would like to follow up the steward forum idea, with the possibility of a pool of people acting as mediator between fans and stewards – would be ideal so that you would be ‘on call’ a couple of times a season to try to help cool down situations We would like to have an ongoing benchmarking exercise and have a feature on the web site – simple things like monitoring what other trusts are doing / what they are charging / how many members they have but also football related stuff like away ticket prices / parking charges / catering at other grounds so we have a fund of ‘facts’ at our finger tips to either use in raising issues with the club or to help explain things to our members. We could actively work with SC / Trusts at other clubs in the division to share info on travel / parking / local issues etc We need to look at what special communication needs any of our fans have – are deaf fans able to enjoy a fans forum? Are blind fans able to use the web site? This is a specialist area but one we should be addressing. We could have a coordinator responsible for liaising with other groups at RFC (Vice Presidents, Young Royals, Former Players Association, Football in the Community, Academy) making sure they are aware of what we are doing and we know what they are doing and working together as appropriate. We would like a person prepared to make contacts at Reading Uni / Gyosei College and encourage students to come and see what RFC is all about. If you feel you can help STAR then please get in touch at via our contact us page, we'd be delighted to hear from you. |
